That title says it all. I'm looking for a codec that lets med decode m4v-files. QuickTime messes around with my file extensions, even when it's told not to, and QuickTime Alternative doesn't support m4v.

To decode m4v (H264) within avi or directshow to be more precise, try ffdshow.

.m4v files are raw mpeg-4 part2 video streams (not h.264). you can place them in .mp4 with mp4bx (yamb gui) for example
after that you can play them in mplayer, videolan or in any directshow player (eg wmp) after installing the haali media splitter + ffdshow for example...

however there is another possibility: if these files were created by a braindead apple tool, they are already .mp4 files with the wrong extension
yeah apple loves to do braindead things

Sorry.

I hope nobody follows your advice. I downloaded the ffdshow and was immediately told it was filled with MALWARE. Told to quarantine it immediately.

FFDshow is probably the most popular free decoding suite on Windows... perhaps you should get it from the official site, rather than from someplace non-reputable?

Or perhaps your virus scanner is terrible and puts false positives on every other compressed executable.

I downloaded it from the official site and the spyware that caught it is AVG, which is a great program. Maybe this company has been infiltrated?

And are you suggesting that Sourceforge has been infiltrated? ;)

(Also, whenever you get a "virus" detected, you should probably use VirusTotal to ensure your antivirus scanner isn't wrong.)

Yes, AVG is a great program. It was the only one to enable me to get rid of Trojan Defender, which was a pain. I downloaded AVS4you, and this program did the job perfectly.

I run AVG, and ffdshow, and no false positives. That said, I wouldn't get any other of AVG's products except the anti-virus. ;)
