Im backing up Into The Sun, its a straight to dvd movies. Now my avg bitrate was high enough to back it up any ways but as its a STV it has alot of grain on it. I was pondering wether or not it can be improved using a grain removal filter, now has anyone here tryed improving a retail dvd with out making it worse before and what was the results like ? and is doing this worth the time and effort ?

has anyone here tryed improving a retail dvd with out making it worse beforeIt can certainly be done -- though I didn't believe it until I'd been here for quite a while. I think it was some of the pictures in the LimitedSharpen thread that convinced me.
and is doing this worth the time and effort ?That rather depends on you...

There is no hard-and-fast rule that the moment you see grain, you should denoise the hell out of the image. In fact, you shouldn't if you can afford to keep the grain (IMO) and still get a good compression. That way, you haven't altered the movie from the way the director wanted you to see it.

Noise/grain can certainly be removed/reduced by using denoisers, but whether it is an improvement or not depends on whether you like it or not. I have improved DVDs by filtering (improved = looked good to me) and it was certainly worth the time and effort for me. Not sure about you.
Oh, And did I mention that quality is subjective? :)
P.S: Something which you can do is to try out different filters and ask others about their opinion about the results (maybe a thread here) in case you want some popular opinion too.
