I am new to the whole dvd burning.

Wondering if a Portable Toshiba SD-R5372 dvd burner will work on a laptop? or will the device only run properly on a pc?

any help is greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

A laptop is a PC, only smaller. As long as its system requirements meet the burner's it will work.

Just make sure you are using USB 2.0 rather than 1.1 for best results.

I use a laptop and external burner with no problems. I burn at 4x for best results. Also, your burning program in addition to the make of disks can have an impact on the quality of your burns.

Read the Guides section on the lefthand side of the main page of doom9 for more info.

Regards,:)

P.S. Also, check out the Burning forum here at doom9 for helpful insight to successful burning.

BTW Welcome to doom9!

I had another thought that you could make use of 2COOL'S Guides located Here. (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=242410post#242410)

You may not understand some of the info. now but you will find it a good resource as you progress in your backup skills.

Thanks for the replies.

Whenever I plug the external dvd burner to my laptop my shrink program runs extremely slow sometimes to the point that it will freeze and not respond until I shut off the dvd burner.
Any ideas as to how I remedy this?

thanks again

Do you experience the problem when trying to do the initial transcoding with Shrink, or are you trying to burn out of Shrink and having the problem with the burning phase?

If the answer is yes to the latter, check out this neat little guide on Enabling DMA Mode (http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm). If this isn't your problem, post back with more details and someone will figure out what's going on with your setup.

When select the backup icon on top of shrink window the program feezes when external dvd burner is plugged in. When I unplug the dvd burner the program instantly resumes and the window that allows you to select the target pops up.

I went through the DMA anabling steps and found that the setup was exactly as the guide recommended.

thanks for the help

Have you visited the manufacturer's site for your burner and checked for more recent firmware? Try an uninstall/reinstall of Shrink, too.

Does your burner give you problems with other software app's, or only Shrink? If the problem is with Shrink and the burner, there's a good clue.

If you leave the burner uninstalled during the Shrinking process, can you later the burn the .ISO that Shrink has created for you?

If you haven't sorted this, list the make and model of your burner.

It appears as if your burner is an enclosed burner rather than a true external burner per this Link Here. (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/195) and this Link Here. (http://www.coolerexpress.com/lggs16xsutrf.html)

What OS are you using?
How much memory do you have?
What speed is your CPU?
How are you connected to your Burner?
What burning software are you using?
Did you use an installation disk for your burner?

Do not surf or use your computer for anything else while burning.
Disable your Virus protection.
Stop unnecessary processes from running in the background.

I tried unistalling shrink and reinstalling and problem persists. The only time shrink freezes is when I click on the backup button to select the destination of the video files and the burneris plugged in. As soon as I unplug it the backup button works fine. It does the same thing with Nero. How do I burn the ISO shrink created? don't understand that process (sorry i'm a newbie)

The burner is, as feedback said, an enclosed burner. It is the Toshiba SD-R5372

Don't know what OS is or how to find out which one I am using?
I have 192 MB of Ram
I have 2.12 GHz
It is connected via usb cable.
to burn I use Shrink
As soon as I plug the burner in the laptop tells me "Hi-Speed USB device plugged into a non hi speed port"

Hope this info helps.

thanks again for taking the time to help out a newbie

That's probably your problem. As I said in my first post, as long as your laptop meets the system requirements it will work, and USB 2.0 is one of the requirements. You'll need a PCMCIA card that supports USB 2.0.

How do I burn the ISO shrink created? don't understand that process (sorry i'm a newbie)As soon as you get a USB 2.0 card for your laptop, you should be good to go.

As far as burning the Shrink-created .ISO, here's one way with Nero. As soon as Nero opens, exit from the "New Compilation" window. Go to the menu bar, choose "Recorder", and from that dropdown selection list, select "Burn Image". From the next window that opens, navigate to and select your .ISO file and you'll be in business.

OS is Operating System such as Windows XP or Windows 2000. Right click 'My Computer' then tick Properties it will show you your OS for future reference.

Like I said in my first post make sure you are using USB 2.0, which is Hi-Speed. So, get a PCMCIA card for it.

in addition to ammck55's suggestion of using Nero, i would also highly recommend that you take a look at ImgBurn:
The Official ImgBurn Website (http://www.imgburn.com/)
which is a successor to the great burning application that was a part of DVD Decrypter, by Lightning UK.
...burning an .iso image is as easy as two mouse clicks ... :)

ok guys here the latest, thanks for the suggestions by the way

I purchased a PCMCIA card and now the shrink program does not freeze up. However, I get up the phase where the program is chacking discs and that is when the program stalls now. It never gets passed that phase.

by the way i am using a blnk DVD -R by Imation but I have also tried the memorex DVD -R

any ideas as to what could be the problem?

thanks again for the support

That's great that you got the new 2.0 card, it'll give you much more flexibility than for just burning.now the shrink program does not freeze up. However, I get up the phase where the program is chacking discs and that is when the program stalls now. It never gets passed that phase. This is confusing, to me. Which program is doing what? Supply exact phrasing, or error messages so we can know what the heck you're dealing with. You could even capture a screenshot and post it to Imageshack so that we could all look at the error, if that's what it is you're getting. Is Shrink failing, or not? What burning app did you decide to use and what, if any, problems do you encounter there?

Check this database for discs that'll work with your specific burner.
Burner/Media compatibility (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters)

Maybe someone else can unravel this, but I can't do anything with it.

In post #10 you indicate you are using Nero to burn.

So, make sure you have 'burning with Nero' Enabled in Shrink.

Go to the 'Edit' button at the top of Shrink then click it, then go down to 'Preferences' click it next, then go to the 'File I/O' tab, make sure you have the 'Enable burning with Nero' ticked.

Go to This Link Here (http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/) and give it a good read. You will find a lot of useful information at the DVDShrink site, so go to This Site Here (http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php) also.

Good Luck! and read, read, read the two links I posted.

I will try to explain better ammck55,
After I use shrink to capture only the main movie. I select the backup icon in shrink to begin then I select my dvd writer as the backup target. From there it begins encoding once complete it quickly tells me that files are ready to be burned and starts the phase where it checks discs and there is where I have my problem. There is no error message it is just that it will remain in that phase for up to 30 minutes maybe longer but that is as long as I have let it go. If I try to cancel the program tells me it is not responding. Sorry for going through all the steps but maybe this way you see how far I get.

Thanks feedback, I checked and burning with Nero was enabled I went through the steps you suggested. I also read through both links and cannot find a problem similar to mine.

Maybe I missed something somewhere? Some setting or configuration?

thanks again I am very frustrated dont want to give up on this just yet.
