View Full Version : Question about frames in anime encoded with DVDRB & CCE

In virtualdubmod I've noticed, from scrolling thru the orginal vob and the encoded vob, that there are A LOT more frames with "lines" in the CCE encoded version than in the original. You can easily find these "line frames"(distorted or whatever you want to call them) in the encoded version, while you have to hunt for a while to find one in the orginal.(BTW, source is NTSC) Frame to frame the original and the cce encoded version are different, and in searching for an answer for this, I've read about I, B, and P frames and I think I understand why the original and the cce version are different.

My primary question is do all these "line" frames hamper the quality? I'd never noticed this before, but today while viewing one of the cce encoded backups I could actually see these "lines" in certain areas of movement(like in the mouth of a character who is talking), and you don't see these areas in the original or in a transcoded version. Is what I'm describing normal?

Below are some sample screenshots:

Don't know if cause is related or not, but I seem to have encountered the same problematic result when backing up son's new Bionicle3 movie (Lego CG movie). I haven't done any of this sort of material in DVD-RB before so am assuming for now that I need to do some different setup for this material (ie defaults not appropriate).

I processed full disc - reduction % of 82.9. I used HC Encoder, however did change it to FAST speed (lower quality) as I wanted it done quick, and figured as I wasn't reducting too much it would be sufficient. I had also updated to Nan's recent DGDecode, and HC 0.16, then since copied DVD-RB 1.02 upgrade over from the zip - maybe stuffed something here.

Off to do some searching of the forum (haven't done that yet) and maybe see if problem is reproducable on higher quality setting with clean full install of 1.02.

Just clicked in my mind that you didn't indicate whether your result plays properly on standalone that will de-interlace on playback. In my case problem is visible on such.

@sandman

Often when NTSC users see those lines and think it is a result of interlacing, what they are actually seeing is the pseudo frames created by telecining... the "lines" don't really exist in the source because it is 23.976fps progressive.

If you send your REBUILDER.INF file to dvd-rb@dvd-rb.com I could tell you the format of your source.
