View Full Version : merge a series of .vob

After searching, I still can't see an up-to-date method to merge a series of .vob, hope to get help here. I rip a DVD with many episodes(in seperate dir like VTS_1_01, VTS_1_02...). DVD Decrypter can't rip them as one vob. I need to do that because I need the file in one Xvid encoded .avi. Previously I tried to encode them as a chain with Autogk, but the output file is terribly out of audio sync. So I guess merging vobs to one big vob before encoding is the way to go.
Which is the suggested method to merge vobs? I read a thread said that using the Dos command "COPY /B VOB1+VOB2+VOB3 MERGED_VOB" simply do that. Is that correct? Thx for any advice.

Hi!
in seperate dir like VTS_1_01, VTS_1_02...
The filenames you've typed don't exist in DVD file structure.
I'm sure you meant to type, "VTS_01_1, VTS_02_1, etc", which would be indicative of separate TITLES for separate episodes.
One simple approach you could try is loading the ripped .VOBs into MPEGMediator, in the sequence you desire...

Hi setarip_old, yes you are right, I mean those dir structure :p
But mpegmediator seem quit old(2003) and its website is not exist now. What about DVtool?(the software which claim to be swiss army knife)

Did you try it?
When you open the DVD in DVD Decrypter using File mode, then click Edit > Select Main Movie Files, does it appear to select all the episodes? If it does, click Tools > Settings..., click the File Mode tab and set File Splitting to None, then rip. That should give you all the episodes in a contiguous file.

The program works - its age is irrelevant.
One place you can find the program is at:

Hi CWR03, I know what you mean, but this time I need to rip the vob one by one and then merge them, because some of the content is related to play menu(this is an story like DVD, user can choose the scene interactively). If rip in file mode, it will be a non-sense movie, with the scene jump like crazy.
Anyway, thx a lot :)

Have you tried to Demux all the vobs and then... merge the "Real" MPEG files? (Using the Video and Audio streams you want, ofcourse).

That sounds interesting - I've never seen one like that.
If you are unable to find or use MPEGMediator or the DOS command, try Vidomi - it can also string together .VOB files without re-rendering.

hi guys, finally it is failed. Although the merged vob file is ok, the resulting encoded Xvid file is still out of audio sync  The problem start at the third attacted portion(previously the third vob file), the audio became earlier 1 second approximately. Then the rest of the file is keeping out of audio sync. It seem to be the same if I directly encode them as a serial chain files in Autogk. What to do now?

i still don't understood why you need to merge the vobs but,...go ahead.
if each vob came from the same dvd,why you don't trash it all and use dvdshrink in re-author mode to separate each episode in separated folders?
if you want only one big vob, uncheck "split vobs files into 1Gb size chunks" in output files tab inside preferences.
this will solve your problems with audio delays(issues).
CWR03 was posted one good hint too: Did you try it?

If it does, click Tools > Settings..., click the File Mode tab and set File Splitting to None, then rip. That should give you all the episodes in a contiguous file. you did it?if don't...do.will work very fine.

Yes raquete, I know file mode rip, but I need to rip some of each section and then rejoin them to one vob... File mode will include many "jumping scene".

Try Vidomi. Unfortunately it won't work with the latest XviD, but you can either uncheck XviD at installation and use DivX 3.11, or uninstall your current XviD, install and use Vidomi, then reinstall/uninstall/reinstall (trust me) your current XviD. For such an old program, Vidomi does an amazing job with encoding, and I've never had audio synch problems with it. I still use it for my video captures which always lose synch with GordianKnot.
Even if you don't want to encode with Vidomi, try using it to string your .VOB's together. You would load them in order, assign an output path, then click Options > General Options and check "Ignore settings and use MPEG copy code," click Ok and Start. In about a minute you'll have one large .MPG file without re-rendering.

i found it now,take a look (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showpost.php?p=313441&postcount=7)
you only need to rename "DAN.MPG" to "anything.VOB"

Let me clarify, there is no problem at the vob merging step. The resulting large vob file is ok, no problem in audio sync. But that occur after encoding to Xvid file. I guess it is a common problem with virtualdub or virtualdubmod(Autogk use it). Previously I found the similiar audio sync problem when merging divx or xvid files with virtualdub. :(

Why not encode the individual files, then merge those? Or have you already tried that and it didn't work either? Merging encoded .AVI files is almost as fast as your hard drive can write.
Let me clarify, there is no problem at the vob merging step.
If that were true, there'd be no audio synch problem after the encode. Try the Vidomi merge method, in fact after you load two files, you can select a small range that crosses where the two join and encode that, rather than redoing the entire file.

@miniyoyo
If you're sure that your merged .VOB is in synch from beginning to end, I'd once again suggest that as a simple, not very time-consuming experiment, you load it into MPEGMediator...

CWR03, yes, previously I had tried, but it is always out of sync, so I asked for the method to merge vob before encoding here...
you load it into MPEGMediator...
setarip, do you mean load the merged vob file into MPEGMediator? What is the purpose

(I think you must be kidding now) - The purpose is the one you stated! - To create a synchronized XviD-compressed .AVI...

following setarip_old and CWR03,you don't need my or any other help(i think),just follow the advices.
now i have doubts in how you're doing it and in what is happening..
Let me clarify, there is no problem at the vob merging step. The resulting large vob file is ok, no problem in audio sync.If that were true, there'd be no audio synch problem after the encode.yes,i think the same if .....
The purpose is the one you stated! - To create a synchronized XviD-compressed .AVI...this is the cool solution if your meged vobs are in sincro.
if encoding the merged vobs or encoding individual files give problems,i ask:
each vob came from the same source(some of them) and have the same numbers of audio tracks and delays?
did you read about this in link "joining vobs"?
if they the vobs have this differences, you'll have issues like that.

I'm having the same issue and the same goal
but I used VOB Merger to get a large 1 VOB file then load it into AutoGK or directly into VDM
btw, does the #1 DVD Ripper can rip multiple chapters on the DVD into 1 avi file? I mean not seleting the longer duration chapter as DVD Dec does
