I'm looking at tdeint and leakkerneldeint
wondering if there is a generally accepted "better" deinterlacer

they're for different things (well, they're both for deinterlacing... but).
leakkernelbob is great for standards-conversion of interlaced video. it's very fast and the quality is very good. on interlaced video it'll give very similar results to tdeint (on kernel mode anyway).
tdeint is good when you have to perform major surgery on a clip and need all the help you can get, no matter the speed.

I noticed that leankerneldeint requires you to set the tff or bff manually
whereas tdeint can read it from avisynth
since mpeg2source can set it in avisynth..is there a way for leankernel to pick it up?

i like to set it manually because you never know when field-order is messed on your source. it only takes a second to check field-order by stepping through bobbed frames.
also field order is particularly important in kernel based deinterlacing because it can create ugly artefacts if the order is wrong.

Besides, with TDeint you also have to state it in the script if your field order is TFF. Avisynth automatically assumes BFF.
