I've googled and found a number of applications that enables the trimming of wmv files. I was wondering if they are reliable as I seem to have read somewhere here (while I searched from wmv trimmers) that wmv are unfriendly when it comes to editing.
I would much appreciate if someone who recommend a tried and tested application for such task.
Thanks.

A free and easy program is Windows Movie Maker; you can find it already installed if you're running an XP OS. I think the latest version is 2.1 but you might have to download that from MS. I've played around with it, basic slideshows, some .AVI imports, etc., and if IRC, the .WMV format is the only export/destination choice.
Windows Media Encoder (a totally different, free MS program) will handle .WMV files (naturally), and so will several other video editors--some free, some not. Depends on how much learning you want to do and how much money you want to spend.
The good thing about most of the editing software that's out there, is that there is usually a 30 day demo offered. Your Googles have already told you what software can handle .WMV files, so that's the first step, right there. Any software that you've looked at that states that it can import and edit .WMV files, will do just that, so don't worry about it and just start editing!

If you are certain you don't want to trim WMV (I would trim it) you can use
TMPGEnc to convert the WMV to AVI, then trim away.

Hello, thanks for the replies.
I had a go using Windows Movie Maker and another commercial application. Before I try anymore, is there anything about the wmv format that prevents it from being edited without re-encoding? Either I am doing it wrong or I can't seem to find the option to trim sans re-encoding using those two applications.

Streaming video such as WMV needs to be re-rendered in order to trim.
