I assume the inaccessible image at http://ausil.us/avisynth.png has the error message. Rehost the image, or just type in the text of the error.

I always use regmon, and set it to only show writes and/or denied accesses, then you can really narrow down exactly what's going on.
Is that main user limited rights but the bash shell given full admin rights?

No i actually logged off and logged in as my Admin user (root :) ) as launching from bash after becoming the root user didnt work, yet this method still didnt work.
Regmon hey ?? I'll have to check it out.
Man why is Windows so difficult

I had a problem similar to your's. I fixed it by doing a "repair" which involved using the W2K install CD's. (couldn't install any ".msi" stuff).
Good luck.

Virus protection product protecting registry???
The accessed branches are :-
HKLM "SOFTWARE\AviSynth"
HKLM "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\AviSynth"
HKLM "SOFTWARE\Classes\.avs"
HKCR "CLSID\{E6D6B700-124D-11D4-86F3-DB80AFD98778}"
HKCR "avifile\Extensions\avs"
HKCR "Media Type\Extensions\.avs"
HKCR ".avs"
HKCR "avsfile"

You mean an Anti-Virus is preventing the install ??

The user running the installer must have full write access to all the branches including the top level entry of the registry I listed above. Whatever you are doing this is not the case. The usual causes for this are :-
1. The installing usercode is not currently a full administrator.
2. Antivirus software is defending/protecting the registry.
3. A Stealth Virus has changed the access right to the registry to hide/protect itself.
4. The registry is corrupted.
