Well, after installing XP on one of my machines, the I could see and access the XP comuter from the other machines running 98 and ME, however, the XP machine could see the other machines, but the network was extremely slow and did not work sometimes.

I've just installed my first in house network with my machine (WinXP Pro) connecting to my flatmate's (Win98SE) with a cross over cable and 2 network cards.
I'd suggest checking that the speed setting is set to auto sense. Remember that even a 100BaseTX network is only capable of transferring at 12Mb/s (Think about 4 MP3 songs a sec). Thats not that fast really (not if you're wanting to transfer ripped DVD files ;)
Here is a site I found invaluable when teaching myself about networking:
http://www.homenethelp.com/
specifically the following section of that site:

Hope I've helped

Is not that the transfer rate is slow, it's that the access time to the other computers is slow. It appears that the computer freezes then minutes later all is well. Happens when I print from the XP computer too.
