I have NTSC disks that I want to play while traveling on a UK DVD player. I know I can make a backup wirh no region code but will the NTSC play on a player that is PAL?

AFAIK every PAL player on the market *must* support playback of NTSC, and just about every TV sold here in Europe in the last 10-20 years should support playback of 60Hz stuff, either as NTSC or PAL60...

So yes, unless you're using an ancient TV it should play.
