I've used DVD Decrypter for a long long time, but never ripped to ISO before. I did today and it worked fine, but along with the .iso came a .mds file. What is that file, and do I need to keep it to burn the ISO image?

The .MDS file contains information about the .ISO image file - about the layer break location and, if your hard drive is in FAT32 format, information about how to join the several pieces of the .ISO that DVD Decrypter wrote (in order to overcome FAT32's 4Gb, single file size limitation).

If you're burning to dual layer media, it's been advised that you select the .MDS file, rather than the .ISO file directly.

If your hard drive is in FAT32 format, as previously staed, you absolutely need the .MDS file, so DVD Decrypter will know how to rejoin the multiple .ISO segments it created.

In any event, it can't hurt to rely on the .MDS file for your burn...

I run a WinXP Pro install on an NTFS partition.

So instead of choosing the .iso to burn, I choose the .mds? Interesting stuff.

If you burn back with DVD Decrypter, you can choose either. .ISO will work directly with other tools, such as Daemon.
