View Full Version : Various errors in decrypting

I've been having numerous and varying problems decrypting DVD's for some time now - the end result has always been either corrupt and badly pixellated frames or .avi files that are larger than they should be. I've traced the problem to decrypting, since re-ripping with a different drive or program usually fixes the sizing issue, and the pixellation is in the ripped .vob. I've tried many drives and several ripping programs (Sometimes SmartRipper will successfully rip a disk in the same drive that DVD Decrypter ripped corrupted). I'm sorry I have no other data to offer, but all logs indicate clean rips with no errors. I went so far as to format a new source drive, then replaced the primary drive and reinstalled Windows. The only thing I can think of at all is that on boot I see "No 80-pin connector on IDE channel 2." My DVD-ROM and burner are on that channel.

Sounds like your original DVDs are in less-than-pristine condition - and one or the other (DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper) manages to "get through" the problem sectors with less than perfect results.

You might try carefully cleaning your discs...

As far as the "No 80-pin connector on IDE channel 2.", I believe that should only affect the data transfer rate. You should replace your 40-pin connector cable with an 80 pin connector cable...

Check DVDDecrypters settings in the I/O tab, you've probably got "ignore read errors" checked and Software retries set to 0. It's highly recommended to reset All the settings at the defaults unless you have a specific need to change them (except for "Check for program updates at startup" in the Events Tab).

@Taelon

Per "CWR03":
but all logs indicate clean rips with no errors.

Even if set to "ignore read errors" checked and Software retries set to 0, DVD Decrypter's log would list all unreadable sectors it encountered and skipped...

@setarip_old, yeah I guess you're right, but I couldn't think of any other reason for the apparently corrupted video. I don't think I've ever seen a corrupted video that DVDD ripped without read errors being logged.

It doesn't seem to matter - I had so much trouble with one disk of my Alien Quadrilogy that I rented that disk from Netflix, and it did the same thing in the same place - the audio skipped and became out of synch until I clicked the slider ahead of the bad point. That one I solved with SmartRipper. And yes, they were both clean, as are my drives (all five that I've tried).

That was the first thing I checked, since I wasn't showing any read errors but was still seeing problems. When I have run into a problem such as a scratched disk, I definitely see retries during ripping.

I paid quite a lot for a high-quality, round cable to reach from the motherboard to the drives, since it was such a long stretch for a flat cable that it would end up getting kinked. I swapped cables between hard-drives and DVD drives and saw no change. I don't know of a 40-pin connector that will even work or reach.

The worst problem is that I can never know that there's something wrong unless I watch the entire video. Loading one into VirtualDubMod will give me "Anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp" errors if the rip is bad to the point it will cause sizing issues, but corrupt frames will show no error.
