Subtitle stream not visible when viewing 16:9 dvd on 4:3 tv

I recently tried adding a subtitle stream to a 16:9 dvd. When I play the dvd on my computer the subtitles show up as they should. However, when I view this dvd on my 4:3 tv, the subtitles are nowhere to be found. If I set my dvd player to 16:9 mode the picture is stretched vertically to fill the full tv screen and the subtitles show up. As the entire picture is on the screen in 4:3 widescreen mode (with the obligatory black bars at the top and bottom) I'm having trouble understanding how the subtitles could possibly be outside the viewable area of the tv or somesuch thing when in 4:3 mode, but perfectly visible when I change the settings on my dvd player to 16:9.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can get the subtitles to show up when watching the movie in the aspect ratio of my television?

U should add 2 sub streams, for WIDE and LB or move the subs up before reincoding.
What proggy did U use to make the subs?
