Guys,

Just trying to rip Chamber Of Secrets to my HTPC hard disk and I can't.......I've tried DVDDecrypter and I've also tried DVDShrink (reauthored, uncompressed) and I get IO errors.

I've heard it maybe a encryption issue, I've searched high and low but can't find an answer, can you help!?!?!???

What region is the disk? I recently did region 1 of the same movie with no errors and no special treatment, so I don't think it's special encryption.

R2.

The other two I have ripped fine?!

Did start to think it might be a scratched disc but a google search suggests other have issues. Its always played fine on both my DVD players.

I've heard it maybe a encryption issue.

That's not the case...

Its always played fine on both my DVD players.

That can be misleading, since many decent DVD players can compensate for minor physical flaws, while ripping programs read every "0 and 1".

Do try cleaning your disc...

(You might also want to run a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your DVD burner/ROM. Maxell makes one that retails for approximately $10US)

Thanks for the replies.

MY HTPC has never had a problem with any other disc (I've got about 400 movies I'm slowly working through) but for the cost of a cleaning disc, I'll pick one up !!

Thanks Again

just curiosity - what kind of drive are you ripping with? I/O errors are pretty severe indeed.

i've found some discs to be completely unrippable (these weren't commercial discs, just alternate sources for some very rare animation). in the end i used a standalone DVD player and a DV capture box to get it off the disc. thankfully i only needed it for syncing purposes.

Seriously, have you tried a good, simple cleaning? Have you turned the disc over, and carefully examined it, to see if you can see any dirty spots, grime, fingermarks, schuffs, smudges, scratches, or gouges?

The most common cause of I/O errors, by far, is a dirty disc or a scratched disc. There can be other issues that can cause the same errors, to be sure, but most of those "other issues" would have also caused the other disc you mentioned from this same set to emit the same error. Since that one went fine, I urge you to try a few thorough cleanings.

There are a few new copy protection schemes which can even cause some of the rippers to give an I/O error, but the Harry Potter discs have not had those newer forms of copy protection on them.

Andl, as mentioned above, checking to see if it will play on a standalone player, or using a computer software program such as Media Player or Nero Showtime is meaningless. This will rarely tell you if if the disc is dirty or scratched, since they are designed to try to ignore all bad spots and display the next available frame which is okay.

A ripper is designed to get every bit of data, so most of them will stop and let you know if there is a single "1" or "0" which cannot be read.

@BSpielbauer

You appear to be, "A day late (Actually 25 hours) and a dollar short" ;>}

See my post 4 prior to yours.

What's gained by repeating (right down to my reference to "1s and 0s") what's already been succinctly offered and already been acknowledged by the thread starter?
