I've just bought the RC2 version of Breakfast Club (finally out) which looks identical to my self imported RC1 version except for having a lot more languages. I ripped this with DVD Shrink blanking out everything but the main menu and the movie. Unfortunately the menu does not show up in 16:9 on my standalone though it does so on PowerDVD 5.

I've taken a look at the menu with PgcEdit the current domain stream attributes say: Video 16:9 Automatic Pan & Scan instead of Automatic Letterbox. Is that the reason why my standalone does not show it with black bars on my 4:3 TV?

Correct.

Note: Don't try to change the attributes to letterbox, or the menu highlights will be misplaced.

So how come I can't rip the menu in 16:9 as is on my original DVD?

Your menu is in 16:9. If you watch the DVD on a 16:9 TV, you will see it in 16:9.
But the buttons highlights are designed for 16:9 and 4:3pan&scan only. Therefore, you cannot use this menu in letterbox mode on a 4:3 TV.
If you really want it in letterbox, you will have to demux it, create new highlights for letterbox mode, and remux. It's tedious, and somewhat difficult to do, especially for animated menus.
Have a look at this sticky thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=99306) if you want to try.

RC2 version of Breakfast Club (finally out)...nice to know! one of my old-time favorites -- guess I need to get that one, too :-)
But the sound is ridiculous: :(Deutsch (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono) Englisch (DTS 5.1) Französisch (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono) Spanisch (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono) Italienisch (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono)the upmixed english DTS eats up everything! even my ole (German) VHS tape was in "HiFi-Stereo"! too bad it's gone :(
