Hi all,
I've noticed some strange issues with the x.264 codec that I'd like to ask about and give an example screen shot to demonstrate what I mean (much easier than trying to explain it all in words). However, I'm not sure how to take a screen capture of an individual frame. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I guess this is what you mean:

The problem is fixed in rev 308, just use the bob0r's build at http://x264.nl
As for the screenshots, just play and pause the video in Media Player Classic->File->Save Image. Note that sometimes you can't capture the exact frame you want, cause due to some bug, MPC captures the next (or previous) frame.

Please forgive my ignorance but where can I find Media Player Classic? I think I have it installed, since it's what Gordian Knot launches if I do a compressibility test, but I don't know where it is on my system or what to search for. What's the executables name?

And note you have to be in VMR7/9 to save image in MPC. You can of course go back to Overlay Mixer after the screenshot. :P

OK, forgive me, but I'm lost again. What do you mean by VMR7/9?

Start Media Player Classic. Then in the Menu: "View" - > "Options" - > "Output" under DirectShow Video. You could try to capture using different output options to see the result.

The VMRs (Video Mixing Render) will allow you to capture images, but it seems generally agreed that overlay mixer provides better output but without the ability to save images. (I've heard faulty hardware support is to blame for VMRs looking "bad")
