View Full Version : DivX Pro free?

It appears that DXN is giving away DivX for free, today only:

http://www.divx.com/divx/create/download/

The catch is that you have to give them your email address, and they don't say how your address might be used (besides mailing out the serial #), nor do they offer any assurance that your address will be kept confidential. I would like to download the DivX Create Bundle but I don't want to open myself up to a world of SPAM...

EDIT: Sorry, it looks like a bunch of people posted the news at the same time.

Good point. And now that I think about it, there have been quite a few complaints about DivX 6 in their forums. The system tray icon, the Converter, the downloading of ads, and some incompatibility with WMP10? I guess I was momentarily blinded by the FREE thing, but on second thought I think I'll let this one pass.

does divx pro work with avisynth scripts? a serious limitation if not. it (the divx player) cannot play fourCC "XVID" ? "this video contain unknown data" ? are they kidding? cannot play mkv/avc - attempts to load ogg spliter and fails? it seems only to exclusively play divx variants. any number of opensource/free/shareware players, mplayer, vlc, mpc, bsplayer, zoomplayer, even wmp will play mkv with haali splitter and ffdshow.

what's "pro" about? gosh i made a mistake downloading it. it's not even suitable to make a doorstop.

I used a yahoo e-mail address and the notification with the serial, was sorted as "spam mail", by Yahoo Spam guard...
...maybe you should look in your spam/bulk folder...

yeh, i got the serial "instantly" on lycos. haven't tried the encoder yet...i dont have a standalone (?) player device, so compatibility isn't an issue atm or longer, heck get a tvout card to the big screen if anything? HTPC are all the rage eh?

as for the "handicap" of not playing other codecs, imo, means you just cannot keep it because other software players do divx and anything you can throw at it like mplayer. a bit OT here tho...

I tried with my hotmail id, yahoo id and isp id. isp id worked, the others didn't.
There have been reports at videohelp.com of people having succeeded with g-mail and yahoo. Probably-server overload. If you have latest Firefox-try all your e-mail ids. It won't actually download the software more than once:).

EDIT2: ok... it took ages but now i finally got the 1st email with the serial (about 7 hours later!!!).

A friend of mine got this answer from DivX:

"Dear DivX User,

We apologize for any delay in receiving your FREE serial number. Our mail servers have been working like CRAZY this past 24 hours to handle all of you guys Smile

Don't worry, you will get your email with a serial number, but it is just taking a little bit longer. It could take up to 2 days before your receive your serial number. So please be patient and give us until beginning next week before you come to our Support Team for a serial number Smile

Enjoy!

I got 3 keys instantly on gmail, hotmail and web.de, but the new DivX converter seems to be very bad, no comparison to the old Dr. DivX, cause you can't edit enything, you even cannot chose video bitrate, what's that? The only possibility is to put a file into it and press convert. I looked everywhere for some configurable options but there aren't any. On the other side, nice birthday present :)

Hey hey all!

We're still sending out serial numbers - we had literally hundreds of thousands of people accept the free offer and our mail servers have a serious backlog to churn through.

If you're using webmail services be sure to dig around in your bulk mail folders incase your serial number got filtered there.

Finally: DivX doesn't abuse your e-mail addresses! The e-mail address used for the promotion let's us create an account for you in our support database, notify you of updates for your registered product, and, if you checked the box for the newsletter, send you our monthly blurb about the happenings in the world of DivX ;)

Have fun with the freebie!

Argh...
Just great. I use YPOPS! for accessing my Yahoo account with my e-mail client and it's set for emptying my bulk mail folder automatically.
Bad luck. Ah well...

Guys, there is a "catch" or gotcha to this offer: while it does include the Divx Pro codec, the Converter app does not do MPEG2/DVD/Transport Streams w/o coughing-up another $10.

It was interesting bait, and a number of us "bit", but I wonder how many will pony-up the 10 bucks.

For my part, the very first conversion I tried, of an "ER" transport stream recording worked but it didn't work:

1. It was much faster than AGK/Xvid and produced "pretty" output

2. It didn't crop the program properly, and the Converter doesn't have any options to force cropping.

The show I tried it on had a "running crawl" underneath it (for Hurricane Rita coverage) and while the crawl was not there for the whole program, it must have confused Divx because the resulting crop/aspect was wrong. When the crawl was present, the 16:9 program was shrunken into the top of a 4:3 window.

No doubt I picked a bad file for my 1st try, but an inauspicious beginning nonetheless..

p.s. The reason Converter worked w/my TS is cuz it comes w/a 15-day trial period!

conversions just as "featureless" and "handicapped". fully uninstalled and purged to date. certainly not a keeper, free or otherwise. it's a "has been" and "also ran" - sorry to be all negative but against really baitless, DIY freebies out there from real hackers (think only good things without the bad press)...

What you are also getting is the DivX Pro 6 codec free.

Although "DivX Create" (with everything the .divx container format is supposed to offer) is a bold concept, I can't see it gaining much momentum until it's fully supported in stand-alone players!

I still unaware of any stand-alone players that fully support .divx.... Unless some of you guys no differently?

Stand alone players that can support all the features of the DivX Media Format (menus, chapters, subtitles, multiple audio, etc.) are coming! Just give us a little time. ;) We've got almost all the major chipmakers on board, and are working with the OEM guys to get 'em out as soon as possible. Can't give you dates, but it will be sooner rather than later, based on the information I've got. Let me know if you guys have any questions.

Will there ever be a stable and working (and maybe even graphically attracting with all the bells and whistles) muxer/editor for .divx container?

Yes there will be. Part of the reason you haven't seen this yet is because the DivX media format is rather more complex than regular DivX AVI files and it has taken some time to fully develop all of the tools and test harnesses in concert with our CE partners to ensure a great experience across the board. This involves a great deal of iteration where we develop, test, create test suites, and so on. We're nearly there :)
