What are the codecs and settings I can use for Pocket PC playback?

I am not sure, but when you install the Pocket PC player, you can easily find out:

It seems there is a "Beta" player that does support RV9. I tested it on a co-workers iPaq and it was able to play 320x240 at 15 fps.

What audio codec can the "Beta" player playback?

I remember a discussion like this once... I love my PPC! It supports anything <= 320x240 resolution within codec standards. A 400mhz PPC can decode RealVideo10 at ~9fps at full resolution. A newer, 624mhz PPC can support full resolution RealVideo10 playback at ~16fps. An overclocked PPC at 741mhz can breeze 25fps RealVideo10 at maximum complexity.
It supports the cook and realaudio (and spiro?) audio codecs. It does not support AAC or any real/helix supported codec released after RealVideo9.
YAY. Uh, as far as I recall, that's how it was. (I know I got the benchmarks right).
I personally favor AVC/H.264 for PPC--it gets about the same speed as RealVideo, but needs a special, in-development player (PM me for a link). But when I do use RV 4 PPC, I use audio at 5kbps!!! Decoding is so much faster this way, and a lot more processor time is devoted to the video.
Cheers!

PS: I used RealAnime for my encodes!! :D

I'm currently trying VLC with x264 / HE-AAC in MKV. If it works, well, cool, or else I will make a GUI dedicated to PPC encode with RV8, RV9/10 and RA8

Doesn't work on my Pocket PC 2002. :(

Yup, I have a 2003SE at 624mhz....
But when it comes to perceptual quality, why not use x264 and TCPMP w/ffmpeg plugin?
PS: Files MUST be in the standard .rm container, even if they have variable bitrate, etc. AVI, MKV, etc is not supported by the player, or so I've discovered. AAC isn't either.
If you use TCPMP, though, you can use AAC/HE/PS, AVC (anything but High Profile), MKV/OGM, etc...

What? Any specific error message? I'd like to help with this, cuz I too play a part in the avc-ppc decoder scene...

no errors, the player skip from the begining to the end. Always black screen.

Ah yes, the infamous MKV AVC parsing/handling error. Hold on a sec... I think I got a fix.

Well, seems I could only playback RV8 and cook :(

I made my first RV8 + Cook @ 80kbps total to fit 15MB (My SD card). It it works well, I will release a "RealAnime Pocket" to encode such low bitrate content.

from my bench, xvid is the fastest and the Q is pretty nice at ~200kbps (320x240, 12FPS). At ~80kbps, it produce some blocks in fast motion but it's bareable.
RealAnime Pocket will use mencoder then :)
I could try another language... and make it multi-os...
