What is the recommended codec or filter for playback of mostly Xvid files?

This (http://www.aziendeassociate.it/cd//ffdshow/ffdshow-20050920.exe) or this (http://www.aziendeassociate.it/cd///XviD.cvs.head.exe).

Could you also say why?
Oh and is it possible the links don't work?

a) The first one points to FFdshow. In general a very useful directshow & videoforwindows decoding engine which comes with decoding and encoding of also other common codecs, so this would be the most comfortable choice. Just choose in the decoding tab which codecs will be decoded by ffdshow.
The Second one is a specific XVID codec for de- and encoding XVID and decoding YV12 Bitstreams out of avisynth for instance.
b) Links do work as they should, maybe its a browser specific problem, or try some minutes later as the hosting webspace isnt reachable for the moment.

Is there a difference in quality between Xvid and ffdshow concerning playback?

No, unless you enable postprocessing options. However there's a speed difference. Usually ffdshow is faster.

ffdshow is really better.
No need for Vobsub, AC3Filter, Xvid codec, etc.
I'm already using it for a while.
Say can I encode also with ffdshow? Or should I use the Xvid codec to encode it to dvd?
