View Full Version : Corrupt MPG2 system file from a hardware encoder

I have a corrupt MPEG2 file which was captured using AverMedia 550 TV tuner/hardware MPEG2 encoder with their proprietary UltraTV software. I can view 2.5 hours of the recording and then the video just stops. VirtualDubMod informs me that I have a "block error".

I would like to know whether there is any salvageable material after the erroneous block and fix the file, if possible.

Here's what I tried:
Demuxing with TMPEGEnc--stops at the frame in question and produces a valid video stream up to that point as far as I can tell. "Merge&Cut" freezes after I take the slider past the problem point.
Resream works on the part of the video stream that I get after demuxing and I can see that video.
bbMPEG would not even allow the file to be inserted in the appropriate field
I tried to import this file into VirtualDubMod and again--stops at the fram in question.
I tried to process the program file in PVStrumento and that program also crashed at the same point.
I also used DVD2AVI and tried to create a project for the segment inquestion: everything works fine until I get to the part where corruption is present and once I navigate past that point, the file freezes.
Adobe's Premiere Pro and Encore DVD 1.5 both freeze with this file.
AVSEdit script using DirectShowSource() does not open the file either. This seems to be a strange behavior, because files produced with this encoding method open with DirectShowSource() but not with MPEG2Source(). Why should this be?

In addition to these tools, I also found references to some other utilities that may help, but I have not tried them yet:
- Bitrate Viewer
- DV-Tool
- MPEG2VCR
- M2Edit Pro 4

How would you approach diagnosing and correcting this problem? Please help, the recorded material is important to me!

Thanks in advance.

Videolan is used to playing corrupt MPEG files. If that can't play any of the corrupted video, then I feel you're going to have a hard time no matter what you use.
