Dear experts,
is it possible to change (is re-encode the right term?) a mp2 file (1.0 layer 2, 192 kbps, 48 kHz, 222800 frames) from mono to stereo without losing lots of quality (keeping mp2 format)?
Actually, the main part of the audio is in stereo, only the first few seconds are in mono. I don't want to cut them off or change the duration in any other way because I have to multiplex it with a video file.
If it's possible, please tell me which program can get the job done.
Thanks in advance!

Hi!
1) Load it into "TMPGEnc" (Different than "TMPGEnc DVD Author")
2) Set "TMPGEnc" to "Audio only"
3) Click on "Settings" radiobutton - and change audio format from "Mono" to "Stereo"
4) Save with a new filename

@setarip_old: Before using your method the audio played in slow motion and I thought changing channel information to stereo would help.
Now, the re-encoded mp2 plays with normal speed but has in echo in the background.
Very strange, but the source file is okay: when I open it in mp3DirectCut, play it, stop it and replay it everything sounds fine (normal speed, no echo)
Does anybody still know how to repair this b*tch?

only the first few seconds are in mono.
Hopefully, you only re-encoded this portion of the audio...

I don't think I undertanded well... Is only one mp2 file encoded one part in stereo and one part in mono? In only one file???
And the loss of quality ocur in any lossy to lossy or lossless to lossy re-encode. If you only change the container from .mp2 to Matroska (.mkv), w/out re-encoding, you will not loss any quality. So the re-encode should be the mark of the quality loss, not the container change.

Thanks, setarip_old - that was the point!
I've splitted the mp2 in two parts with mp3DirectCut (mono & stereo), re-encoded the 2 mono seconds using TMPGEnc and merged it afterwards with the stereo part. And now I have a perfect result! :D

I am in a similar predicament and thought of using VDubMod. Is there a program generally agreed upon as a good quality one for this task (like SSRC is for samplerate conversions)?

Has anyone tried Sox (http://sox.sourceforge.net/) for this?
